Sportsmanship

The topic of Sportsmanship was at the core of the Character Education presentations for Division II students on May 17, 2016.
Sports are a big part of culture all throughout the world and often play an important role in our lives - whether one is playing in pick-up games on the school field, on community teams or at the professional level. It is commonly said that participation in sports has many benefits as noted in the graphic below:

Additionally, it is regarded that sports help individuals build character.  This Character Education presentation and forthcoming classroom sessions focused on how the students, felt sports had affected their character and what lessons they had learned through sports - either negative or positive. The qualities mentioned included teamwork, leadership, honesty, responsibility, patience, self-confidence, persistence, sportsmanship, and respect. Additionally, we examined the 6 Pillars of Character Involved in Sportsmanship as noted in the image below:

Division II small group classroom lessons were supplemented by video clips from Values.com and reflections from “Apple Seeds” (Inspirational, Motivational, Quotes, Blessings, Prayers) as well as content from the Virtues Project.

St. Vincent de Paul Food Drive

In conjunction with the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, our spring service learning project is to collect food and toiletry items for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.  This society is affiliated with Ascension Parish and its primary goal is to ensure all Catholic families in our school area that need help, get help.  Due to the economy and the time of year, the shelves in the hamper room are low in supply.  We encourage students to bring in items to help out families in our area from Tuesday, May 24th to Monday, May 30th 2016.  Below is a list of food and toiletry items that the society is especially in need of:

Food Items: Canned tomatoes, canned salmon, flakes of ham and chicken, canned fruit (mixed fruit, peaches, pineapple), canned vegetables (green beans, peas, peas & carrots), canned soups, juice, strawberry or raspberry jam, peanut butter, cereal, crackers, “Sidekicks”, uncooked bagged white rice, Macaroni & Cheese, cake mixes, cookies, snack items for lunches

Toiletry Items: shampoo with conditioner, tooth brushes and toothpaste, dish soap, laundry soap, cleaning supplies, facial tissue and toilet paper.

Thank you for your continued support of school-initiated endeavors to help those in need in our community.

Responsibility

The topic of Responsibility was at the core of the Character Education presentations for Division II students on May 9, 2016.

In other words Responsibility means . . .
·         Others can depend on you.
·         You are willing to be accountable for your actions.
·         When things go wrong and you make a mistake, you make amends instead of excuses.
·         You keep your promises or agreements.

Forthcoming Division II small group classroom sessions further explored this topic. Lessons were supplemented by video clips from Values.com and popular songs as well as reflections from “Apple Seeds” (Inspirational, Motivational, Quotes, Blessings, Prayers) and content from the Virtues Project.
