Gr. 6Z Religion & Health: “My Values Collage”

In Religion class, we recently explored the topic of our core values.

Each of us is unique. . .  There is not another person who is exactly like us.  Each of us is born with a number of characteristics that are unique to us.  Each of us has a distinct set of talents, interests, likes and dislikes which define who we are and will grow up to be.

Individually, the task of each student was to create a print media collage complete with a variety of imagery and illustrations which depict their core values.  Prior to starting their projects, we examined and brainstormed a list of their characteristics and values.  The items from this list were then incorporated as images and text into the design of their respective compositions.

The following are examples of some of the student work that was created.

District ARTWALK 2018

District ARTWALK 2018

The District ARTWALK is an annual celebration held in the Spring recognizing student excellence in the visual arts.   Each school is asked to select one piece of artwork to be framed for display at Central Office.

Each classroom teacher selected one piece of art to be included on the St. Clare ARTWALK Showcase trifold display. All staff were given an opportunity to vote on the artwork using the following criteria:

-       - Shows technical proficiency of the outcome
-       - Shows care and consideration in its creation
-       - Is bright, unique, interesting, energetic
-       - Is well-composed
-       - Demonstrates student growth

Congratulations to ViVi Nguyen from 6Z whose artwork was selected to represent our school.  It is an ink on white 12” X18” drawing paper Zentangle Art composition. We are proud to feature the artist and her work below:

Her piece demonstrates a delicate balance between free form and symmetry. Using various line weights offers the boundless opportunity for the creation of truly unique patterns. Ultimately, this gives rise to a relaxing tension between positive and negative space.

St. Clare Feast Day / Faith Day – January 25, 2018

St. Clare Feast Day / Faith Day – January 25, 2018

On Thursday, January 25th, St. Clare is celebrated our feast day in a Faith Day format with grade level presentations and activities throughout the day focusing on our Patron saint and the district theme of prayer.  St. Clare’s actual Feast Day is on August 11th but we were wanting to schedule it in a month where we did not have a key spiritual celebration.  Central to the Feast Day celebration is a Liturgy honouring our patron saint which is set for 11 AM.

We were blessed to have the involvement of Vicki Hayles and Sr. Madeleine Gregg delivering engaging presentations to grade level groups in the morning.  Vicki Hayles actively serves our school community as the Sacrament Coordinator and Ascension Parish. Sr. Madeleine Gregg, a trained Spiritual Director, is a member of the Resource Staff at the FCJ Centre, serving as part of the Spiritual Direction Training Program (SDTP) and offering spiritual direction.  She has many years of experience in adult faith formation and retreat work, combined with years of teaching from elementary to university levels.

The Gr. 1, Gr. 4 & Gr. 5 were treated to District Faith Theme Presentations (on the topic of Prayer & Matthew 7:7) with Sister Madeleine from the FCJ Centre.  At the same time, the other classes (Gr. 2, 3 & 6) rotated through Sacrament presentations with Vicki Hayles.  We were further blessed and grateful that Sr. Madeleine was able to serve as the guest presider for our St. Clare Feast Day Liturgy at 11 AM.

A timeline of the Feast Day events is noted below along with some pictures from the day.

6Z Religion & Health - New Year's Resolution Projects

A New Year's resolution is a tradition in which a person makes a promise for the year ahead to do an act of self-improvement or something slightly nice beginning from New Year's Day.

Individually, the task of the students was to create a project complete with a variety of imagery and illustrations which depict the New Year’s resolutions that each selected for this year. Prior to starting their projects, their first task was to brainstorm a list of possible resolutions which may work for them to make successful change in their lives.

Students were then asked to select and represent at least three resolutions through images and words. These items are to be incorporated into the design of the project.  The students had the choice of creating Visual Presentations, Google Slide or Prezi Presentations, Photo Essays or Pic Collages that highlighted the required information outlined.

The following are examples of some of the student work that was created.

CTF - Interest Groups - Abstract Art - Session 1

The students on my CTF interest group during the last session before Christmas created abstract paintings or mixed-media collages on canvas board based on a theme of their choice. In the time allotted, students had opportunities to experiment, create and showcase their knowledge and skill in this abstract art style.

A number of the art projects created by the students were basically a collage of shapes, images and text (words & phrases) glued to 9” X 12” canvas boards.  The background on the canvas board was painted. The selection of the images, cutouts, shapes and colour choice of the background was dependent upon the individual’s personality or preference.

Another option for students was to create abstract paintings focusing on an assortment of geometric shapes created by the selection of a myriad of colour separated by white or black spaces.
Below are some pictures of some of the students’ work that was created.
