Sacramental Recognition Celebration - June 11th, 2018

One of the things for which we as Catholics are grateful is the sacraments of our faith.  Sacraments are signs of God’s grace.  They are ways in which God touches our lives and makes us more like Christ.  We were honoured to have worked in conjunction with personnel from Ascension Parish as well as other parishes in the Diocese of Calgary where our students have been attending with their families.

On the morning of June 11th, we gathered as a school community to recognize and honour the students at St. Clare who received Sacraments in Baptism, Holy Communion, Reconciliation, and Confirmation at different points throughout the school year. The numbers of students from St. Clare receiving Sacraments this year was quite impressive as noted below.

Baptism – 9 Students

                                                   Holy Communion – 64 Students

Reconciliation – 67 Students

                                                           Confirmation - 26 Students

In celebration of these honours, students received commemorative Sacramental tokens, certificates and a special treat. We would like to congratulate all students involved in receiving their respective Sacraments at Ascension Parish and other parishes in the Diocese of Calgary.

Art 5N: Spring Flowers Project - Cut Paper Relief Sculptures

After a long and dreary winter comes the beautiful season known as Spring. Closely associated with this season is the lengthening of daylight, the greening of the grass and the arrival and blossoming of beautiful flowers.

The task of the students for a recent art project was to create a cut paper relief sculpture featuring a decorative flower pot with bouquet of six colourful flowers.

In creating your project, the students were to ensure that special consideration must be taken with respect to the choice of colours and selection of shapes used in the creation of the flower pot and flowers.  The flower pot was to be comprised by a rectangular piece of coloured construction paper which has a pattern or form of décor.  It was then to be glued to the background surface.  The bouquet was to include a variety of six colourful flowers which were to be glued to the background paper below the top of the pot. The following are examples of some of the student work that was created.

5N & 6Z - New Life Projects

Recently, both the 5N & 6Z classes concluded our study of the Lenten and Easter season.

The word Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for springtime ”lencten” which describes the gradual lengthening of daylight after the winter solstice.  Thus, closely associated with the transition from winter to spring is the Lenten Season – the period of preparation for in the death and resurrection of Christ at Easter.  Consequently, as part of our Catholic faith and traditions, we believe that from the sacred and blessed event of Easter stems or springs NEW LIFE.

The students' task was to incorporate the knowledge obtained in their religion classes about the Lenten and Easter Season as you create a visual considering the following options based on the theme of new life. The students had the choice of creating an illustrative collage, print media collage, Google Slide, Power-Point Presentation or Pic Collage that highlights the required information explored with this topic.

The following are examples of some of the student work that was created.

Humboldt Strong - Prayers for Humboldt

Humboldt Strong: Prayers for Humboldt

Many tributes have been given, much has been shared and reflected on since the tragic accident which occurred last week.  It is through these difficult times that we can find solace in God, in prayer and in those around us to give us strength, faith and hope to move forward.

Jay Smith, better known around town as Smitty Kingston, posted his heartfelt response to the deadly crash involving the team on social media.  On the night of the accident he couldn't sleep — his head and heart were heavy due to tragic accident involving the Humboldt Broncos. So Smith picked up his guitar and expressed his grief in the best way he knew — by writing a song in a poignant tribute to the team and their loved ones.

He posted this beautiful composition on his Facebook page and it’s been viewed over 1 million times in just a few days. Take a listen by clicking on the link below and you will understand why. Smith said that he's surprised by how far the song has traveled and suggested that if it helps even one person find some solace, then his goal in writing it has been accomplished.

In memory of the 16 people whose lives were lost . . . offerings of strength and courage to the people who survived the crash and prayers and condolences to all families and friends impacted by this tragedy.

A PRAYER FOR HUMBOLDT

DEAR GOD,
WE PRAY FOR ALL WHOSE LIVES HAVE BEEN TOUCHED BY THIS TRAGEDY.
FOR THOSE WHO MOURN, IMMERSE THEM IN YOUR LOVE
AND LEAD THEM THROUGH THIS DARKNESS INTO YOUR ARMS, AND LIGHT.
FOR THOSE WHO COMFORT, BE IN BOTH THE WORDS THEY USE
AND ALL THAT'S LEFT UNSPOKEN; FILL EACH HEART WITH LOVE.
WE ASK THIS THROUGH JESUS CHRIST, WHOSE OWN SUFFERING BROUGHT US LIFE,
HERE AND FOR ETERNITY.
AMEN

On Thursday, April 12th, all students and staff were invited to wear jerseys and / or green in support of the Humboldt Broncos. Students and Staff of St. Clare School have raised over $1048.12!!! All the money raised will be donated to the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation Inc. We are inspired by the heartfelt response to members of our school community as noted in the images below . . .

Easter Reflection / Easter Hallelujah

The following Easter reflection written by Helen Steiner Rice has been appreciated by people from all ages and walks of life. The beauty of spring merged with the grace of God makes this poem a wonderful one to read. Reading this beautiful composition will take you closer to the real essence of the poem and allow you to experience the true grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

“Easter Reflections”

With OUR EYES we see
The beauty of Easter
As the earth awakens once more.

With OUR EARS we hear
The birds sing sweetly
To tell us spring again is here.

With OUR HANDS we pick
The golden daffodils
And the fragrant hyacinths.

But only with OUR HEARTS
Can we feel the MIRACLE of GOD'S LOVE
Which redeems all men.

And only with OUR SOUL
Can we make our 'pilgrimage to God'
And inherit His Easter Gift
of ETERNAL LIFE.`

Easter is the central event in the life of the Church. The events that happened that first Easter continue to be the power, hope, and peace within our lives even today. It is my hope that the content of this message will help you celebrate the victory that is the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.  Below is a beautiful Easter version of one of my favourite songs by Leonard Cohen.

Student Led Conferences – March 22, 2018

In conjunction with the recent reporting period, St. Clare hosted Student Led Conferences on March 22, 2018

This occasion offered students  the opportunity to show their parents what they know and are learning in school.  Parents were enlightened through a “Gallery Walk” of many of the activities that their child were engaged in throughout the term.

Parents were able to talk with their children with regards to their work displayed throughout the room and in their folders.  Chromebooks were also available for students to showcase their work in their various subject areas on projects that incorporated technology.

We were so pleased to have such a great turnout for this wonderful “Celebration of Learning”.  Below are some pictures of some of the students’ work on the displays from the “Gallery Walk” and Student Led Conferences.
