The students in 5N have been learning about abstract art styles.
Cutting up photographs and images and gluing the parts in new
combinations brings forward countless possibilities. Of course, created is a type of collage that
was made famous by Cubists like Picasso.
This time the students were combining the collage methodology with the
mindfulness and approach of the Surrealists like Joan Miro. Surrealism was a
20th-century art movement that sought to release the creative potential of the
unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images.
The students’ task was to make a Surrealistic monster
reminiscent of the strange and whimsical creatures that Joan Miro crated. In creating their compositions, the students
ensured that their creature contained parts and cut-outs from various sources. The next step was to add to the strangeness
of their monster by including peculiar pictures in the background of the
picture.
The following are examples of some of the student work that
was created.
