A
mosaic is the art of decorating a surface with pictures and patterns made of
little pieces of stone, glass or tiles of different colours. Mosaics can be
used indoors on walls, floors and ceilings. Mosaics are sometimes used outdoors
on pavements.
The
distinct and stark contrast of a black silhouette against a landscape
consisting of background of combinations of warm or cool colour schemes has
been an inspiration and study for many artists and photographers. The two
styles blended together produces a very interesting artistic effect.
The
task of the students was to create a blackened tree silhouette against the mosaic
landscape background of a winter sky at twilight. In creating their projects,
ensure that special consideration must be taken with respect to the choice of
colours and selection of shapes or images (rectangles, triangles and squares). They were to pick a dominant color scheme for
your sky. As we are trying to capture the colors of twilight, the students
realized they should use predominantly cool colors (blue – purple) with a black
silhouetted tree in the foreground. In constructing their projects, the students
organized and glued the construction paper tiles to the background before the
final step of cutting out and gluing the tree / ground silhouette from black
construction paper over the mosaic.
The following are examples of some of the student work that
was created.
