Lent: A Different Approach to Fasting!
From a tradition
associated with Lent we know that we are supposed to “fast” or to give up
something or make a “Lenten
sacrifice”. Such a sacrifice frequently tells us more about ourselves
than it does about God. Lenten
sacrifices tend to be oriented toward giving up things like superfluous things
like junk food, time spent on social media or watching television.
An alternative to this
practice of Lenten sacrifice is to challenge ourselves to dedicate ourselves to
doing acts of service for
others. From such actions we grow closer on our faith journey to God and
His son Jesus. But there are many other creative ways we can welcome Jesus’
healing touch this Lent. Below are some suggestions from a Lenten
Reflection called “Lent: A Different Approach to Fasting” that you may want to consider.
- Fast from anger and hatred. Give your family an extra
dose of love each day.
- Fast from judging others. Before making judgments,
recall how Jesus overlooks our faults.
- Fast from discouragement. Hold on to Jesus’ promise
that he has a perfect plan for your life.
- Fast from complaining. When you find yourself about
to complain, close your eyes and recall some of the gifts He has given
you.
- Fast from resentment or bitterness. Work on forgiving those who
may have hurt you.
- Fast from spending too much money. Try to reduce your spending
and give these savings to the poor or less fortunate.
