6Z Health - Health & Wellness - Positive Steps to Wellbeing

Health and Wellness has been a major unit of focus during the last term in 6Z Health class. Health & Wellness is the general condition of a person in mind, body and spirit, usually meaning to being free from illness, injury or pain - as in “good health”, “healthy” or “wellbeing”.

The students of 6Z prepared visuals and presentations relating to this area and topic.  The presentations varied from power-point, video, Prezi to a visual (poster project).

Their presentations on the topic reminded us that life is a puzzle . . . Health & wellness dimensions are like separate pieces, that need to be fitted together to make meaning. Though we all seek a balance between the mind, body and spirit, to lead an ideal and fulfilled life, it’s rarely completely attained.

The following are examples of some of the wonderful and creative work that was created by the students.

6Z Religion - "Our Lenten Journey" Project

The season of Lent is a time for spiritual growth and renewal. At this time, we are called to commemorate and reflect on the Lord’s passion through spiritual preparation, conversion, and penance.  During recent weeks in 6Z Religion, the students have been examining content relating to the season of Lent.  Lent is the period in which we prepare for the death and resurrection of our saviour Jesus Christ.

Leading up to their project, the students explored the various symbols of the Lenten season and their significance. The students’ task was to create an illustrative collage or scene which clearly illustrates the meaning of the journey that Catholics travel during the sacred season of Lent.

The following are examples of some of the wonderful and creative work that was created by the students.

5N ART - Keith Haring Inspired Projects

The students in 5N have been continuing to learn about abstract art styles. Their focus shifted to a well-known American abstract artist known as Keith Haring.

Keith Haring (May 4, 1958 – February 16, 1990) was an American artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s. His work is characterized by bold colours, simple images, rhythmic lines and symbols and is often connected with the Abstract Art and Pop Art movements. Haring's work was often heavily political and his imagery has become a widely recognized visual language of the 20th century.

After looking at a large sample of his work for inspiration and ideas, the students’ task was to create a cutout paper collage in the style of Keith Haring. In creating their compositions, the students ensured that special consideration must be taken with respect to the choice of colours and selection of shapes used in the collage. The constructed image itself must be the center of interest. It was also required that attention be taken to present the background in an interesting manner.

The following are examples of some of the student work that was created.

Art 5N – Surrealistic Monster Collages

The students in 5N have been learning about abstract art styles.

Cutting up photographs and images and gluing the parts in new combinations brings forward countless possibilities.  Of course, created is a type of collage that was made famous by Cubists like Picasso.  This time the students were combining the collage methodology with the mindfulness and approach of the Surrealists like Joan Miro. Surrealism was a 20th-century art movement that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images.

The students’ task was to make a Surrealistic monster reminiscent of the strange and whimsical creatures that Joan Miro crated.  In creating their compositions, the students ensured that their creature contained parts and cut-outs from various sources.  The next step was to add to the strangeness of their monster by including peculiar pictures in the background of the picture.

Gr. 6Z Religion & Health: “Friendship Prayer & Reflection Compositions”

In conjunction with Religion & Health classes, we recently have been exploring units relating to our Relationships with others.  Specifically, we have been discussing the importance of our friendships and the impact they have on our lives.

Friends are people we feel good with. Some make us laugh, some hear us out and really listen to our hearts, others support us when the going is tough, and still others just hang with us when we need down time. A true friend holds up a mirror in which we see ourselves.  They are the ones who show us our strengths when all we see is weakness; they point out our good character traits, like courage and loyalty, when we are down on ourselves. They remind us of past accomplishments and spur us on to tackle obstacles or deal with our shortcomings. They build into our lives and we are richer for having spent time with them. We come away with a stronger sense of “self” because we have been together.

Most importantly, friendship is a life-line. Connecting with like-minded people who genuinely care about one another is a gift we take for granted all too often. The gift of friendship is one that we must take time to reflect on with words of thanksgiving.

Individually or in pairs, the students’ task was to create a prayer poster visual focusing on the topic of friendship.  In creating your visual, the students were to ensure that they included a thoughtful prayer or reflection about Friendship. It was to be completed on a Google Doc and then centered and glued on the paper provided. Surrounding the prayer & reflection were quotes and colourful illustrations which highlight the message communicated.

Art 5N - Twilight Winter Silhouette and Sky Mosaics

A mosaic is the art of decorating a surface with pictures and patterns made of little pieces of stone, glass or tiles of different colours. Mosaics can be used indoors on walls, floors and ceilings. Mosaics are sometimes used outdoors on pavements.

The distinct and stark contrast of a black silhouette against a landscape consisting of background of combinations of warm or cool colour schemes has been an inspiration and study for many artists and photographers. The two styles blended together produces a very interesting artistic effect.

The task of the students was to create a blackened tree silhouette against the mosaic landscape background of a winter sky at twilight. In creating their projects, ensure that special consideration must be taken with respect to the choice of colours and selection of shapes or images (rectangles, triangles and squares).  They were to pick a dominant color scheme for your sky. As we are trying to capture the colors of twilight, the students realized they should use predominantly cool colors (blue – purple) with a black silhouetted tree in the foreground. In constructing their projects, the students organized and glued the construction paper tiles to the background before the final step of cutting out and gluing the tree / ground silhouette from black construction paper over the mosaic.

The following are examples of some of the student work that was created.
